Bulgarian TV station finds monitors in toilet

i344740

A never-before seen scene in Bulgaria’s forth national TV station has occurred this Monday. The staff of TV7, one of the previously major TV stations in the country, has found its computers dismantled in the morning on the first working day of the week, with the monitors locked inside one of the staff toilet rooms. This vandal action was made by one of the sports journalists of the media – Ivo Tonkov, as an act of protest, says Luba Manolova, freelance reporter. Tonkov, as well as many of his other fellow collages, had to receive a total of three salaries for the previous months, but because of the ongoing finance and discrediting crisis in the media over the past year have not yet received them, despite the promises from TV7’s CEO Kiril Blagoev.

TV7, and its sister channels News7, News7 HD and Super7 were on the verge of temporarily ceasing broadcasting on Monday, sources from the media’s staff say. All of the staff members had to bring the monitors out of the toilet room and put the computers back together in order to prepare the broadcasting of the news for the day. Because of the incident, TV7’s 12 o’clock news were aired without a host, only with a background voice, and only archive clips were shown during the news presentations. The media has not yet made an official statement about the incident. The “riot” sports journalist was presumably fired that day, thought Luba Manolova says he will sue the station in order to receive his outstanding payments.

But, unfortunately, the problems of TV7 do not end here. On Tuesday, just a day after the “toilet incident”, all of TV7’s camera operators have left the station due to not received outstanding payments, anonymous rumors say. This was not directly confirmed by any TV7 officials, however support for this fact was the rather strange broadcasting of TV7 and News7’s live programing the same day. All the presenters were show from one camera angle, and the cameras themselves seemed to not move thought the program. Additionally, an “urgent search for camera mans and lighters” ad was later published on the media’s website. The ad stated that “all of the applicants CV’s would be taken under notice”, which striated the assumptions for the ongoing big crisis in the media.

TV7 went into crisis the last year after the bankruptcy of Bulgaria’s forth biggest bank – the CCB. Many compromates were pulled against the station over the year after the bank fallout, which resulted in major crisis, leaving employees and program reduce. During spring time there was a police attempt to shut down the broadcasting of the station after a court judgment to confiscate the media’s tech due to lost lawsuits. The public reaction after that saved the media group’s channels from being taken off-air, but the finance crisis and the remaining employee strikes are complicating even more the survival of the previously fourth most watched television channel in Bulgaria.
